Compare tax regimes using the same facts

A useful comparison changes the tax rules while keeping the underlying income and evidence consistent.

In this blog

Begin with one income record

Write down the income period, residency and age group before comparing regimes. Use the same gross salary, interest, dividends and classified gains on both sides. A lower result is only informative when the two calculations cover the same facts.

Separate automatic and verified deductions

In the website calculator, salary appears before the standard deduction. That deduction is applied automatically using the selected period and regime. Enter other exemptions and deductions only after checking entitlement; do not enter the standard deduction a second time. The Department’s salaried-individual guide explains regime selection and the different treatment of deductions.

Read beyond the headline

Follow taxable income, slab-rate tax, special-rate tax, rebate, relief, surcharge and cess. The gold rows mark key amounts in both columns. Ordinary calculation rows remain white so neither regime receives a visual preference. A comparison may change when interest or gains are added to salary.

Keep a decision note

Save the year, inputs, exclusions and both results with your own records. The lowest estimate does not establish that a deduction is admissible or that a regime election is valid. Business income and other excluded circumstances require a separate review. Use the official filing route to confirm the choice that applies to your situation.
