Before filing a nil GST return: check more than sales
Zero outward sales does not necessarily mean a nil return; review liabilities, adjustments and the form-specific test.

Ask the form-specific question
A nil return is not a general status attached to a quiet business. It is a filing outcome for a particular form and tax period after the relevant fields have been checked. The GST Portal provides simplified filing methods for certain nil GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns, but their conditions are not identical. Use the current portal guidance for the exact form.
Zero sales is only the first observation. A period can still contain reverse-charge liability, earlier-period adjustments, credit notes, interest or late fee, input-tax-credit reversals, supplies reported through an applicable facility, or other entries required by the form. Conversely, a bank receipt may relate to a non-supply or another period. Review the transaction rather than inferring the return from cash movement alone.
Run a short close checklist
Check the sales register and invoice sequence for the entire period, including branches and additional places of business under the GSTIN. Review credit and debit notes, advances where relevant, exports and exempt, nil-rated and non-GST supplies. Examine the purchase register for reverse-charge transactions and ITC reversal events. Check earlier working papers for corrections carried into this period and inspect the electronic liability and cash ledgers for outstanding amounts.
For GSTR-1, confirm that no outward-supply detail or amendment must be furnished for the period under the nil-filing conditions. For GSTR-3B, confirm that there is no reportable outward or reverse-charge liability, ITC claim or reversal, interest, late fee or other required amount. Do not assume that a nil GSTR-1 automatically makes GSTR-3B nil, or the reverse.
File and retain evidence
Confirm the filing frequency and current due date. Where eligible, the portal or authorised SMS process may provide a shorter filing route; it still results in a filed return and acknowledgement. Never send OTPs to another person through an ordinary message or website form.
Save a dated nil-review note, relevant ledger snapshots and the acknowledgement. If the registration is no longer needed, continuing to file nil returns is not the same as cancellation. Use the portal's cancellation process only after checking liabilities, stock or credit consequences and pending filings. A documented nil review helps prevent both missed liabilities and unnecessary figures inserted merely to avoid a zero return.
Legal/source review: No review date is recorded for this version. GST notifications and advisories may change the treatment.
Publication, content edits and source review are separate records. A content update does not certify a legal review. Check current law, notifications and portal guidance for your relevant period before acting.
